Abstract

The Bratang area, located in the eastern part of Surabaya, is a densely populated residential area that has experienced rapid development since 1989. Although the area is equipped with a drainage system that combines gravity flow and pumping, flooding continues to occur frequently. This situation raises questions regarding the causes of the drainage system's suboptimal performance. To address this issue, a study is required to evaluate the performance of each drainage component, from tertiary and secondary channels to the primary channel discharging into the Sumo River, as well as the performance of the existing retention basin (boezem) and pumping facilities. The evaluation is based on design flood return periods of 2 years for tertiary channels, 5 years for secondary channels, and 10 years for primary channels. In addition, the study examines the maintenance of drainage channels, the retention basin, and the pumping facilities. The results indicate that a gravity-based drainage system alone is insufficient to address the flooding problem. Therefore, pumping assistance is required when the water level in the Wonokromo River is higher than the water level at the Sumo River outlet. Although the combination of gravity flow and pumping provides additional drainage capacity, channel normalization is still necessary to improve the overall performance of the drainage system.
