Abstract

A flat plate structure is a structural system that offers several advantages, including economy, architectural appeal, and simplicity. The design and behavior of flat plate structures require careful consideration of their ability to withstand gravity loads. One of the weaknesses of flat plate structures that needs to be considered is deflection caused by gravity loads, as there are no supporting beams beneath the floor slabs. Deflection analysis often produces deviations and inaccurate results. Several formulations for predicting deflection have been proposed in the literature, including those developed by Kripanarayanan and Branson (1976), Rangan (1986), and Ghali (1989). Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the deflection calculations using Kripanarayanan and Branson's formulation are less accurate because the predicted values differ considerably from field measurements, although the results are relatively consistent. Rangan's formulation is also less accurate because it consistently overestimates deflection, resulting in uneconomical structural designs. Meanwhile, Ghali's formulation provides reasonably good deflection predictions but lacks consistency.Based on the statistical evaluation, the author proposes a modified formulation derived from Kripanarayanan and Branson's formulation by incorporating the influence of the moment of inertia (I) to calculate deflection. The results indicate that the proposed formulation predicts deflection more accurately than the three previously established formulations.
