Abstract

The solid waste management system in Nganjuk City is currently still limited to conventional treatments, this condition has an impact on the uncontrolled amount of waste along with the population growth in this region. Based on data from the Department of Cipta Karya and Spatial Planning of Nganjuk Regency, the average amount of waste disposed of to the Kedungdowo Landfill reaches 160 m3/day. If this condition continues to be maintained without any efforts to reduce waste volume either from the waste source or at the landfill, the disposal site is likely to fill up faster. This study was conducted by calculating population projections, calculating waste generation projections based on population projections, analyzing data with the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) approach using Material Balance so that the volume of waste that can be reduced as residual waste to the landfill and the need for cover soil can be determined. The results of the Material Balance calculation show a waste reduction of 67.8 % and a residual waste of 32.2 %. The remaining lifespan of the existing landfill is 1 year, the remaining lifespan based on the 2009 waste projection is 1 year and after treatment becomes 3 years. The need for cover soil is 15 % of the residual waste volume. The waste disposal system at the Kedungdowo Landfill must be upgraded to a Controlled Landfill considering the problems caused and financial capabilities.
