Abstract

The fabrication of TiO2 nanoparticles for photoanode in DSSC have successfully been conducted for this study. The main purpose of this study was to compare the structure of crystallinity, phase purity, uniformity morphology, optical properties and performance of DSSC that have been fabricated from the synthesized TiO2 nanoparticles both methods namely Sol-gel and Co-precipitation. These studies also examine the effect of the addition of SnO2 nanoparticles powder in the fabrication of TiO2/SnO2 composite. The XRD analysis showed that the nanosized TiO2 powders with anatase phase had been successfully synthesized using Sol-gel and Co-precipitation method. The diffraction patterns also provided the information that a mixture of anatase-rutile phase was formed with the addition of SnO2 powder. SEM was used to analyze and observe the surface morphology of thin films. The results, showed that the particle size distribution is more uniform, free of agglomeration and cracks as well as a more porous structure identified on thin films that have been fabricated by TiO2 powders which are synthesized by sol-gel. The morphology and microstructure also showed a better sized morphological uniformity and a porous structure with the addition of SnO2. Calculation using the tauc plot method obtained the band gap energy is reduced due to the effect of the addition of SnO2 nanoparticles powder in TiO2/SnO2 composite. Furthermore, current and voltage measurements of DSSC using I-V meter showed better performance generated by DSSC with TiO2 nanoparticles that synthesized using sol-gel. Additionally, increased the efficiency of DSSC can be achieved around 100%, (from 0.058% to 0.093%) for TiO2/SnO2 composite photoanode.
