Abstract

=================================================================================

Asbuton is a natural asphalt that was found in the Buton island, Southeast Sulawesi. Asbuton generally are solid phase and that created by naturally as a result of geological processes. At this time the usage of Asbuton are just as hot mix asphalt and asphalt warm, to cold mix asphalt, for asbuton tile, to coat the dam to be watertight, as asbuton block for pavement and etc. Whereas bitumen in Asbuton could be potentially cracked to hydrocarbons (heavy oil) and liquid fuel that can be used to meet the demand for fuel. The processes that have been developed include extraction using an organic solvent (kerosene, hexane, pertasol, and others) and the last is the separation process using hot water as a media which that we known as hot water process, which is still in phase of development. Research utilization of bitumen from asbuton for fuel, particularly liquid fuel is still very little. So that needs to be perform research on catalytic pyrolysis process for cracking bitumen from Asbuton with zeolite-based catalyst. This research aimed to learn and describe the effect of pyrolysis temperature and the ratio of the catalyst with asbuton on Asbuton conversion percentage. Percentage conversion Asbuton yield expressed as a percentage of each liquid and gaseous products with the addition of a catalyst or without catalyst.
This research uses a vacuum pyrolysis reactor which operated in batch to feed asbuton of 250 grams of previously analyzed the levels of bitumen initially and then mixed on the specified ratio with a catalyst based on zeolite characterized first by the BET method, X-RD and SEM. Feed asbuton mixed with catalyze in accordance the desire ratio. After being mixed, asbuton and catalyze inserted into pyrolysis reactor. Then, heater set into desire temperature with operation temperature 250oC, 350oC, 400oC and 500oC. Zeolite Heulandit as catalyze that used on this process are 2.5%, 5%, 7%, and 10% and turned on the vacuum pump. Gas that formed from the process will be through the condenser with temperature 15oC. Gas that condensed (liquid product) will be collected in erlenmeyer, while uncondensed gas (gas product) will be collected in gas holder. After the pyrolysis process completed, yield every product will be analyzed.
From this research shown that pyrolysis method can be used to crack bitumen that contained in asbuton with best operating condition to get liquid product as much as possible by 48.692% without the addition of catalyze is using 400oC as pyrolysis temperature. Natural zeolite can be used as catalyze for this pyrolysis process. Increased the amount of catalyze that used will also increase the yield of liquid product. The biggest yield of liquid product by 84.442% reached by using 400oC as pyrolysis temperature with the addition of 10% zeolite as catalyze.
