Abstract
Garam sudah menjadi komoditas strategis karena kebutuhan pasar yang
tinggi mengingat jumlah penduduk Indonesia yang sangat besar. Namun produksi
garam dalam negeri masih belum bisa mencukupi kebutuhan garam domestik baik
secara kualitas maupun kuantitas. Maka dari itu perlu dilakukan peningkatan
produksi garam nasional secara kualitas dan kuantitas.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membentuk model matematis pengeringan
garam dapur di dalam alat rotary dryer. Dari hasil permodelan tersebut didapatkan
sistem persamaan differensial neraca massa dan neraca energi yang akan
diselesaikan menggunakan software MatLab. Model matematis tersebut akan
divalidasi dengan data lapangan yang didapat dari pabrik garam. Model yang telah
divalidasi digunakan untuk mengkaji secara teoritis pengaruh variabel-variabel
operasi (suhu udara pengering, laju alir udara pengering, suhu bahan padat, laju
alir bahan padat) terhadap kinerja rotary dryer.
Persamaan empiris rate pengeringan garam yang dihasilkan dari percobaan
adalah R=0.44686[X][H]-0.3812 Dari penetapan model dan simulasi menggunakan
Matlab didapat bahwa pada perubahan variabel flowrate udara pengering (1200 -
1800 m3/jam) menyebabkan moisture content garam outlet RD menurun sebesar
0.04%, yaitu dari 0.175% menjadi 0.135%, atau dari segi performa pengeringan
meningkat 23%. Sedangkan dengan perubahan variabel suhu input udara
pengering (170 - 200oC) moisture content garam outlet RD menurun dari 0.149%
menjadi 0.133% atau dari segi performa meningkat meningkat 11%.

Salt (NaCl) has became strategic commodity because high demands from
the market which associated with large population of Indonesia. However, salt
import still inevitable due the lack of annual domestic salt production. Therefore,
salt industry in Indonesia must be improved, both in quality and quantity
This research aimed to established a mathematical model of salt (NaCl)
drying using rotary dryer. Differential equation of Mass balance and energy
balance model obtained and solved using Matlab software and validated using
actual data from PT Garam. Afterwards, model which obtained was used to
studied theoretically the effect of operating variables (such as drying air
temperature, drying air flow rate, solid material temperature and solid material
flow rate) on the performance of rotary dryer.
Empirical equation of salt drying rate from this experiment is
R=0.44686[X][H]-0.3812 . Hereafter, modeling and simulation of salt drying using
MatLab shown that various drying air flow rate (1200 - 1800 m3/hour) made the
moisture content of salt drying declined about 0.4% from 0.175% into 0.135%, or
from the performance aspects the drying process increased 23%. While, various
drying air temperature (170 - 200oC) made the moisture content of slat drying
declined from 0.149% into 0.133%, or from the performance aspects the drying
process increased 11%.
