Abstract

Bahan baku pembuatan baja berasal dari pasir besi yang telah direduksi dan diproses dalam furnace. Sumber daya pasir besi yang melimpah di Indonesia merupakan suatu peluang besar untuk bangsa Indonesia mengolah sendiri bahan baku tersebut untuk menjadi konsentrat Fe, yaitu sponge iron. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh variasi komposisi penambahan arang pada pasir besi terhadap derajat Fe total dan Fe metal dalam pembuatan sponge iron. Terdapat tiga sampel variasi komposisi pasir besi : arang : batu kapur, yaitu komposisi awal 1:0.35:0.3, komposisi kedua dengan penambahan arang 10% 1:0.39:0.3, komposisi ketiga dengan penambahan arang 20% 1:0.42:0.3. Sampel kemudian direduksi menggunakan muffle furnace dengan proses pre-heat pada 900°C selama 2 jam dan proses reduksi pada 1350°C selama 10 jam, dan proses pendinginan dalam furnace selama 12 jam. Hasil proses reduksi disebut dengan sponge iron. Sampel sponge iron kemudian diuji menggunakan alat EDX, XRD, dan pengujian derajat metalisasi untuk mengetahui Fe total dan Fe metal. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa hasil reduksi paling baik terjadi pada komposisi dengan penambahan arang 20% dengan perbandingan pasir besi : arang : batu kapur 1:0.42:0.3.

The raw materials of producing steels are come from iron sand reduced and proceed in the furnace. The plentiful resources of sand iron in Indonesia is a great chance for us to produce as Fe consentrat, called sponge iron. The purpose of this research are to understand the influence of composition variation of charcoal reductant on iron sand to the content of total Fe and metallic Fe in production of sponge iron. There three samples composition variation of iron sand : charcoal : limestone, are initial composition 1:0.35:0.3, second composition with 10% addition of charcoal 1:0.39:0.3. and third composition with 20% addition of charcoal 1:0.42:0.3. The samples are reduced by using muffle furnace with the process of pre-heat at 900°C for 2 hours and reduction process at 1350°C for 10 hours, and cooling process in the furnace for 12 hours. The product of the reduction process called sponge iron. The samples of sponge iron are characterized by using EDX, XRD, and metallization degree examination to determine the total Fe and metallic Fe that formed. From the characterization, the best product of the reduction process occur in composition of 20% addition of charcoal with ratio of iron sand : charcoal : limestone is 1:0.42:0.3.
