Abstract

One of the ways to solve broken bone problems is by using biodegradable material implant that would connect the broken bones. Besides, these biodegradable materials would degrade inside the body during the ossification so there would be no secondary surgeon. In the other hand, Mg alloy made from casting process has been researched which did not give many porous as in the process of powder metallurgy. This research was meant to analyze the effect of sintering temperature and holding time on
properties of Mg alloy for orthopedic devices application. Variations used in this research was temperature (500 oC, 550 oC, dan 600 oC) and holding time of sintering (30, 60, and 90 minutes).
Morphology and compound test were carried by XRD and SEM-EDX, mechanical properties test was carried by compressive and hardness test, degradation rate test was carried by weight loss test, and porosity test was carried by apparent porosity test. From the finished research, the results showed that Mg-Zn-Cu specimen with variation sintering of 550 oC and 90 minutes was the most
appropriate specimen for the application of orthopedic devices. The compressive strength is 175,14 MPa, the hardness value is 410,59 MPa, and degradation rate of 8,57 cm/year. The other conclusion was that with increasing sintering temperature and x holding time would decrease the degradation rate of Mg-Zn-Cu
alloy.
