Abstract

Diethyl carbonate (DEC) was successfully synthesized from ethylene oxide, carbon dioxide, and ethanol using catalyst potassium iodide (KI) and cerium oxide (CeO2) in this work. The experiment was conducted on 34.577 cm3 cylindrical reactor, 20 cm on length and 1.905 on diameter equipped with heat exchanger jacketed, pressure gauge, temperature controller and buffer tank. The reaction time was recorded when all of the reactants (ethylene oxide, carbon dioxide, ethanol) and catalyst (KI and CeO2) were added to the reactor. The synthesized DEC, in liquid phases, was analyzed quantitatively using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry and qualitatively using Gas Chromatography. The effect of molar ratio of ethylene oxide and ethanol, reaction time, type of catalysts (KI and KI/CeO2), and the existence of stirring process were investigated. The reaction was operated at pressure of (30 ± 5) bar and temperature of (170 ± 5) oC. The highest yield of diethyl carbonate product obtained was found to be 1.8%, at 1:5 molar ratio of ethylene oxide and ethanol using Potassium Iodide (KI), and three hours of reaction time.
