Abstract

Coconut husk as lignocellulosic biomass can be utilized to produce reducing sugars and then fermented into hydrogen, a potential alternative energy source for the limited fossil fuel. In this study, enzymatic hydrolysis combined with subcritical water pretreatment were used to significantly enhance the decomposition of lignocellulosic complex into simple sugars with several advantages over conventional processes. Coconut husk was pretreated by SCW in a batch reactor at 60, 80 and 100 bar, temperature of 150, 170 and 190 °C, and reaction time of 20, 40 and 60 minutes. The SCW pretreatment produced two products, sugar liquid and solid (SCW-treated substrate). The solid product was continued by enzymatic hydrolysis using mixture of pure cellulase and xylanase enzymes. The substrate was analyzed by TGA (thermogravimetric analysis) to study the thermal stability and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) to study the surface morphology of the substrate. XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) was used to study the crystal structure of the substrate while FTIR (fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) was used to study the changes in chemical composition. The liquid product was analyzed by DNS (dinitrosalicylic acid) method to obtain the concentration of sugar. Maximum yield of reducing sugar by SCW pretreatment was 0.146 g/g raw material obtained at 150 °C and 80 bar for 40 minutes of reaction time. Whereas, maximum yield of reducing sugar by enzymatic hydrolysis was 9.91 g/g raw material obtained at 150 oC and 100 bar for 40 minutes. The highest total mass of reducing sugar obtained at 80 bar, 150 oC and 40 minutes of 1,4 g.
