Abstract

=================================================================
Granulator’s component in PT.Petrokimia Gresik has been found to have a failure. This machine is powered by a motor that transmits the power through a riding gear and pinion to rotate the granulator’s shell. The riding gear is constructed by two-half parts of gear and fastened by bolts. Based on the latest year’s history, the bolts are found to fail in every 2-7 days.
This final project is intended to analyze the cause of the failure of the bolted joint on this riding gear. The study was preceded by doing a field study, collecting data, doing a literature study and investigating the failure analysis. The force and torque is then counted to be the input in a simulation using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software.
Based on the result of the simulation, the maximum stress is found on the neck of the bolt with a number of 15.468 MPa. This number is way lower compared to the yield strength of material which is 550 MPa. The fatigue crack happened on the bolt is caused by the stress concentration on Its neck, rough surface finish, and there is a pretension due to failed setting procedure. That is why a redesign of ring washer on the bolt neck is made to reduce the stress concentration. On the other side, the machining process when making the bolt should be done smoothly. It is also necessary to change all bolts with the new one when there is a bolt that fails. Moreover, It is also wisely suggested to use a torque wrench with the procedure when fastening the bolts.
