Abstract

Piston tipe mahle merupakan salah satu bagian pada
auxiliary engine MAN D2866 LE kapal Meratus Red Reliance.
Pada januari 2015, piston tersebut mengalami patah sehingga
memberhentikan kinerja mesin. Untuk mengetahui lebi lanjut
penyebab kegagalan dari piston ini maka dilakukan analisis
kegagalan dalam aspek metalurgi berupa pengamatan makro
visual, mikro visual, metalografi, kekerasan brinell, dan uji
komposisi OES. Dari hasil uji komposisi didapatkan bahwa
material ini merupakan paduan aluminium silikon dengan kadar
silicon 11.3%. Dari data pengujian kekerasan, didapatkan bahwa
kekerasan di daerah dekat dengan patahan lebih tinggi
dibandingkan dengan daerah yang jauh dari patahan. Hal ini
dipengaruhi oleh pembebanan yang terpusat pada daerah pin
piston. Selain itu, hasil dari pengujian metalografi pada daerah
dekat dengan patahan tersebar merata eutektik AlSi. Dengan
pengujian fraktografi didapatkan bahwa komponen piston ini
mengalami patah lelah dikarenakan pembebanan yang berulang
dan terpusat ada satu titik yaitu pin piston.

Mahle type of Piston is a part of auxiliary engine of MAN
D2866 LE Red Reliance meratus machine. This piston was
broken on January 2015, so it disturbed the machine work. To
know further about the reason of the failure of this piston, the
failure analysis was done in the metallurgy aspect formed of
macro observation, micro observation, microvisual,
metallography, brinell hardness, and OES composition
experiment. From the result of experiment, it was known that this
material is the combination of aluminium and silicon with the
11.3%amount of silicon. From the data of hardness experiment, it
was known that the hardness near to fracture was higher than
the far one. It is influenced by the burden centered in pin piston
area. Beside of that, the area near to the fracture had many
euthetic fasa AlSi spread out evenly as the result of metallograph.
By using fractograph experiment, it was known that the
component of piston here suffered fatigue fracture because of
repeated burdening and centered in a specific spot namely pin
piston.
