Abstract

Pemanfaatan bijih nikel laterit low grade terus meningkat, hal ini dikarenakan semakin bertumbuhnya permintaan stainless steel dan pengurangan supply dari bijih sulfida. Karena kadarnya yang sangat rendah, belum ada proses yang optimal untuk mengolahnya. Berdasarkan penelitian, proses reduksi langsung bijih nikel laterit mampu menghasilkan nikel kadar tinggi. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mereduksi bijih nikel laterit limonit menggunakan gas CO hasil reaksi batu bara dengan dolomit. Dilakukan perhitungan kebutuhan batu bara menggunakan neraca massa kemudian di variasikan masing – masing rasio massa nya di dalam briket (inner coal) dan bed (outer coal). Briket dimasukkan kedalam crucible bed, kemudian direduksi hingga temperatur 1400oC dengan waktu holding selama 6 jam. Pengujian EDX, XRD dan SEM dilakukan untuk mengetahui kadar Ni dan Fe serta morfologi hasil reduksi. Kadar Ni dan Fe tertinggi didapat pada penambahan 80% inner coal yaitu sebesar 13,99% dan 74,87. Recovery Ni dan Fe tertinggi didapat pada penambahan 40% inner coal yaitu sebesar 93% dan 21%.

Utilization of low grade laterite nickel ore continues to increase, this is due to the growing demand for stainless steel and the reduction of supply from sulphide ores. Because of very low nickel content, there is no optimal process to extract them. Based on the research, the direct reduction process of laterite nickel ore is capable of producing high grade nickel. This research was conducted by reducing the limonite laterite nickel ore using CO gas reacted by dolomite. Coal demand calculated using mass balance, then varied each variable respected to mass ratio in briquet (inner coal) and bed (outer coal). The briquettes are reduced at temperature of 1400oC with a holding time of 6 hours. The EDX, XRD and SEM test were performed to determine the content levels of Ni and Fe as well as the morphology of the reduction results. The highest Ni and Fe content was obtained by adding 80% inner coal which was 13.99% and 74.87. The highest Ni and Fe recovery was obtained by adding 40% inner coal which was 93% and 21%.
