Abstract

Kebutuhan akan baja di Indonesia tidak sebanding dengan produksi baja. Sedangkan ketersediaan akan bahan baku pembuatan baja di Indonesia khususnya pasir besi sangat melimpah. Namun, ketersediaan pasir besi ini belum dapat diolah secara maksimal, kandungan Fe yang dimiliki pasir besi juga cukup rendah sekitar 57%. Maka dari itu dibutuhkan suatu teknologi yang dapat meningkatkan kandungan Fe yang terdapat pada pasir besi sehingga dapat meningkatkan nilai ekonomi dan kegunaan dari mineral pasir besi tersebut. Teknologi yang dapat digunakan untuk peningkatan kandungan Fe antara lain adalah Direct Reduced Iron dan Electric Arc Furnace.
Pada penelitian ini akan membahas mengenai proses pembuatan direct reduced iron dan pengaruh arus yang digunakan pada pembuatan pig iron terhadap kandungan Fe total dan recovery Fe. Adapun variasi arus yang digunakan sebesar 140 A, 160 A, 180 A dan 200 A. Pada pembuatan direct reduced iron, briket pasir besi akan direduksi dengan cara dipanaskan menggunakan muffle furnace sampai temperatur 1350oC selama 12 jam lalu didinginkan selama 12 jam didalam muffle furnace. Selanjutnya hasil direct reduced iron dilebur menggunakan electric arc furnace dengan variasi arus dan tegangan sebesar 16,2 volt selama 6 menit. Lalu hasil peleburan direct reduced iron dilakukan pengujian karakterisasi menggunakan alat uji XRD dan EDX.
Dari hasil penelitian terlihat bahwa direct reduced iron menghasilkan kandungan Fe total sebesar 75,722%. Selanjutnya pada hasil peleburan direct reduced iron dengan arus peleburan 180 A memiliki kandungan Fe total dan recovery Fe yang paling tinggi. Kandungan Fe total yang dihasilkan sebesar 91,585% dan recovery Fe sebesar 98,780%.

The need for steel in Indonesia is not proportional to steel production. While the availability of steel raw materials in Indonesia, especially iron sand is very abundant. However, the availability of this iron sand can not be processed optimally, iron content in iron sand is also quite low around 57%. Therefore a technology that can increase Fe content in iron sand is needed to increase the economic value and usefulness of the iron sand mineral. One of among technologies that can be used to increase Fe content is Direct Reduced Iron and Electric Arc Furnace.
This research will discuss about direct reduced iron making process and the influence of current used in making pig iron to the total Fe content and Fe recovery. The current variation are 140 A, 160 A, 180 A and 200 A. In the manufacture of direct reduced iron, iron sand briquettes reduced by heating using muffle furnace to 1350oC for 12 hours and then cooled for 12 hours in the muffle furnace. Furthermore, the result of direct reduced iron melted using electric arc furnace with variation of current and voltage of 16.2 volts for 6 minutes. Then the result of direct reduced iron smelting is done by characterization test using XRD and EDX test equipments.
From the results of the research shows that direct reduced iron produces a total Fe content of 75.722%. Furthermore, at the result of smelting direct reduced iron with 180 A smelting current has the highest total Fe content and the highest Fe recovery. The total Fe content produced is 91.585% and the recovery Fe is 98,780%.
