Abstract

Indonesia is one of the countries with abundant natural resource potential, especially mining commodities. One of the most abundant minerals in Indonesia is nickel. However, the ability of this nation to process the commodity is still not optimal, so some of these commodities are exported before further processing. As a result the selling value of these commodities is low. Application of technology is still not maximized in the processing of mining materials. Nickel is widely found in the form of Laterite minerals. More than 90% of nickel sulphide concentrate is processed by pyrometallurgical process to form nickel (containing matte). Mini Blast Furnace is one of the technologies used in pyrometallurgy for nickel processing, but in its use still needs to optimize the process, such as charging process. The charging process determines the particle distribution of burden materials which will affect the distribution of temperature and pressure. Therefore, modeling of Mini Blast Furnace is very necessary. In this study, the size is varied to determine the optimal size and particle distribution and temperature. By using a mathematical approach, the selection of process variables can be narrowed, making it faster and more efficient. Computational analysis was performed using Discrete Element Method (DEM) and Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD). After simulation and analysis, small density (coal and dolomite) particles concentrate in the center zone, and large density particles (ore) concentrate in the intermediate zone and peripheral zone. The larger the size of the ore, the greater the mass of the ore resulting in a falling velocity and the greater the kinetic energy of the burden material. The size of 6 cm ore is considered best because it forms the central working furnace. As well, the larger the particle size of the larger ore the voidage is formed and the impact on the gas that can easily pass through the burden material makes the pressure drop acquired low.
