Abstract

1,1,1-Trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) has been used extensively in the past few decades as an insecticide for protection of crops and for the control of vector-borne diseases like thypus and malaria. DDT residues are lipophilic and very difficult to degrade in the environment. Therefore, the effective method of its degradation process by microorganisms is needed. In this study effect of addition of Ralstonia pickettii on DDT biodegradation by Phlebia brevispora was observed. R. pickettii was added into 10 mL P. brevispora culture at 0, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 mL (1 mL ≈ 1,337 x 109 cells). P. brevispora degraded DDT aproxymately 44% during 7 days incubation period. The addition of 10 mL of R. pickettii in P. brevispora culture enhanced DDT degradation by degrading DDT completely. 1,1-Dichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDD) and 2,2-Bis(4-chlorophenyl)acetic acid (DDMU) were detected as metabolite products of mixed cultures P. brevispora and R. picketti. It indicated that R. picketti could enhance DDT degradation by P. brevispora.
