Abstract

Plastic waste generated by people around the world in 2015 reached 6300 MT where 79% of the plastic waste contaminates the environment., one of the alternatives is ecofriendly biodegradable PLA plastic. The brittle and rigid nature of the PLA can be fixed by adding PEG, but its tensile strength decrease significantly. Cellulose were added in the form of microcrystalline cellulose to increase its mechanical strength. The cellulose / PEG / PLA composite were made by mixing the materials at 215 oC above a hot plate and use solution casting method to create specimens with variations of 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 wt% cellulose. Tensile, impact, hardness, FTIR, SEM, and TGA tests were performed to determine the mechanical properties, morphological, and thermal stability of cellulose / PEG / PLA composites. The test results showed the best mechanical properties with tensile strength 4.55 MPa, strain 3.8%, and impact energy 2.3 Joules for the addition of 6 wt% cellulose, composite morphology observed to be best at the addition of 6 wt% cellulose, proved by the absence of agglomeration of cellulose particles in the PLA matrix , thermal stability show best result with the addition of 4 wt% cellulose with decomposition temperature start at 246 oC
