Abstract

Three dimensional CFD simulations were performed to assess the particle dynamics of the impact of particle diameter and density on particle distribution in the rotary drum mixer based on CFD numerical simulation using FLUENT. CFD-based simulations with Eulerian model used rotary drum mixer dimension based on the previous experimental and simulation research of Santos (2016), a cylinder with 0.5 m length and inner diameter of 0.22m. The materials used are glassbeads and soybean with the effect of diameter difference of 6.35 mm and 1.13 mm, the effect of density difference of 2460 and 1164 kg/m3, and each of those effects are done using filling degree of 50% and 25% with various kind of rotational velocity of 0.59, 1.10, and 1.77 rad/s. The results of this simulations show that particles with larger diameter will sink towards the bottom of the rotary drum, whereas particles with smaller size on the rotary drum will tend to concentrate in the middle of the rotary drum. The effect of density does not have a significant impact on the particle distribution. The simulation predictions showed approximate similarly results when compared with the experimental observations.
