Abstract

In the constructional processes, defective work is difficult to be avoided and even occur repeatedly. This can affect the costs and execution time. Furthermore, previous studies concluded that the repairing cost due to defective work amounted to 4% of the value of constructional contracts. In addition, defective work can erode the trust amongs stakeholders. Therefore, comprehending factors of defective work can give an important role in preventing the occurrence of defective construction.
The quantitative research approach has descriptive characteristic. This can be used because the research objects are strongly related to the empirical state of the research locations. In this research, data is collected by using questionnaires, interviews and documentational method obtained from supervising consultants. The purpose of this research is to identify the types of defective work based on sigma levels and to analyze the factors of defective work. Moreover, in identifying and analyzing defective work, the Six Sigmas method is adopted through several stages: Define, Measure, Improve, Analysis and Control, which are often known as the DMAIC concept. Also, this research will simulate the increase of sigma level in the type of defective constructional work by giving recommendational actions using technical matrix analysis and improving recommendational simulation.
The results of this research indicate that there are two types of defective constructional work which are under three sigmas level. The first type of defective work is a porous structure of concrete columns with a sigma level of 2,75. The main factor of this is the lack of compaction in casting processes. Thus, a recommended corrective action which has a strong effect is checking the cleanliness of working tools and formwork inspections. The second type of work defect is the distance of the pile foundation point that is not according to constructional plan with sigma level of 2,76. The prominent factor of this type is the lack of communication between planning consultants and owners. Hence, the recommendational action that has a strong relationship is work permit should cover the readiness of land, materials and equipments. According to the simulations of improving recommendation in defective concrete column (porous structure), this improving recommendation increases the sigma level to 3,63 when the eight recommendations are implemented. In addition, in defective point distance of the pile foundation which is not match the plan, recommendational simulation yield a sigma level improvement to 3,48. This value can be achieved when all six recommendations are carried out.
