Abstract

Path analysis is a structural equation modelling (SEM) technique that
examines structural or causal models with observed variables. Path
analysis is used in this study in an exploratory rather than a
confirmatory way to identify student level and school level factors that
influence the Literacy and Numeracy performance of students using the
available data. In this investigation path analysis with partial least
squares using the computer program PLSPATH Version 3.01 (Sellin,
1990) is employed to examine the influence of various factors on the
Literacy and Numeracy performance of the students and schools
involved in this study.
Partial least squares path analysis with latent variables is a general
technique for estimating the path coefficients in path models that is
extremely useful in situations with large amounts of data and a relative
scarcity of theoretical knowledge (Sellin, 1995). Thus the path analysis
strategy requires the development of an appropriate structural or causal
model and the testing of that model (Falk and Miller, 1992; Sellin..
1990; 1995;). The model involves latent constructs or variables (LVs)
(indirectly observed), drawn as circles in Figure 5.1, and manifest
variables (MVs) (directly observed), drawn as boxes, that specify inner
and outer model relationships respectively. The inner model is defined
as "the relationships between unobserved or latent variables (LVs)",
