Abstract

The Malacca Strait has been the most important route in the world because it is the fastest route for ships from the west (westbound) to the east (eastbound). So that the three coastal states of Malacca Strait (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore) are competing to take advantage by providing crossing ship service facilities, such as pilotage, bunkering, and hub ports. But in 2017 it was reported that Kra Canal will be constructed which will be an alternative shipping route besides Malacca Strait. If it is built, there will be a change in the route which causes the ship to no longer pass through Malacca Strait. Therefore, in this study an analysis of Kra Canal construction impact on the Indonesian port industry will be carried out by analyzing the marine transportation costs for international container mainliners. The analysis results obtained the average change in unit cost ($/TEUs) for international container ships if passing Kra Canal is increase by 30,58%, 21,96%, and 13,08% respectively compared to Tanjung Perak, Tanjung Priok, and Belawan. Meanwhile international transhipment container throughput in each of Indonesian main ports, insignificantly moving by, Tanjung Perak 0,24%, Tanjung Priok 2,03%, and Belawan 1,56%. The decrease in the use of port facilities at each port is represented in revenue ($), i.e., Tanjung Perak of $ 129.592,72, Tanjung Priok of $ 376.943,91, Belawan of $ 344.731,75, and the Straits of Malacca a total of $ 8.163.226,68 for pilotage services and $ 110.338.169,02 for bunkering services.
