Abstract

In Indonesia, there are 129 active volcanoes, one of them is Mount Sinabung. During 2017, it was recorded that Mount Sinabung had some small eruptions due to magma activities. On active volcano, there will be a change in the shape of the surface which is usually called deformation. To monitor the deformation, various methods can be used, such geodetic method using GPS observation and SAR images processing using PS-InSAR technique. The aim of this research is to know the deformation on Mount Sinabung using the PS-InSAR method and validation using GPS data. The SAR data comprises of 27 Sentinel 1A image SLC type with acquisition date between January 2nd until December 28th, 2017 and 4 Sinabung Volcano GPS stations data during 2017. The results from PS-InSAR showed the line of sight (LOS) velocity rate with the value ranges from -40.4 mm/year to 30.8 mm/year with standard deviation ranges from 1.4 mm/year to 31.8 mm/year. The results from GPS data showed the vertical displacement velocity rate with the value ranges from -19,51 mm/year to 16,29 mm/year with standard deviation ranges from 2,61 mm/year to 6,54 mm/year. Both results showed that during 2017 there was subsidence on the body of the volcano. And validation result using t-test can be concluded that “the PS-InSAR method can be used in volcano deformation study same as GPS measurement method” with a confidence level of 95%.
