Abstract

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction requires various approaches to address fundamental challenges such as accuracy, completeness, and data acquisition methods. To obtain a complete and consistent 3D model, reconstructed objects captured from multiple viewpoints must be registered into a unified representation. The registration process aims to combine and align reconstructed data acquired from different camera orientations into a single, complete model. The registration pipeline consists of data acquisition, feature extraction and matching, essential matrix calculation and decomposition, coarse registration, and refinement. This study proposes the use of the Scale-Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm for feature extraction and matching to establish point correspondences among indoor and outdoor multi-view images, followed by the subsequent registration stages. Establishing point correspondences is a critical step because it provides the basis for calculating the essential matrix, which defines the initial geometric relationship between image pairs and enables coarse registration. The registration process is finalized through refinement using the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) algorithm applied to the coarse registration results. Experimental results demonstrate that SIFT performs effectively in feature extraction and matching for point cloud registration. Compared with the Speeded-Up Robust Features (SURF) algorithm, SIFT extracted approximately 2.09 times more features but required approximately 152.19 times longer computation time. Furthermore, the ICP-based refinement process reduced the average registration error by 64.97% for the white car dataset, 8.88% for the Kitchen 1 dataset, and 87.12% for the Kitchen 2 dataset, indicating a substantial improvement in the alignment accuracy of the registered point clouds.
