Abstract

A coating that is inclined to be hydrophobic has been successfully fabricated in this research, entitled “The Effect of Concentration of TEOS and Natural Material Based SiO2 to The Properties of Hydrophobicity”. This research aimed to determine the formation of cristobalite phase, particle distribution and surface morphology of the hydrophobic coating produced and also to determine the effect of the difference in concentration to the hydrophobicity of the hydrophobic coating produced. This research was conducted by sol-gel method which was supported by wet milling and calcination process by utilizing the mixture of natural material which was silica sand from Bangka-Belitung Islands and proanalyst TEOS precursor as the basic material. The hydrophobic coating was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, PSA, SEM, AFM, UV-VIS and WCA. The results of this research showed that the cristobalite phase of SiO2 particles was formed in calcination process. Particle distribution was evenly dispersed and hierarchical morphology structure was formed with the nature based SiO2 particles were side-by-side or surrounded with TEOS based SiO2 particles. The concentration affected the roughness of hydrophobic coating and WCA. If the concentration of nature based SiO2 was high, then the coating would get rougher and the WCA would be increased, so that it would be more hydrophobic, vice versa.
