Abstract

Corrosion is a problem that often occurs in metals,
especially in underground pipes that are susceptible to corrosion due to soil resistivity, soil pH, temperature, air composition, and so on. To overcome this problem a sacrificial anode cathodic protection system (SACP) was used. This method was chosen because it is one of the inexpensive and effective methods of preventing corrosion, and the current protection provided into the system can be controlled quite easily. The anode used in this study is the zinc anode that is in accordance with the specifications and will be wrapped in three stacks with different volume volume ratio with the anode. The cathode used is API 5L GradeB steel pipe. This cathodic protection system will be implanted into three different types of soil media with resistivity, namely humus soil media, sand soil, and clay. After the circuit is made, the next process is to calculate the potential and protection in the circuit. The purpose of this study is the need for different soil resistivity media protection currents with variations in the ratio of volume of backfill to anodes of 2:1, 1:1, and 0.5:1. The Results from the three different resistivity of soil which are humus, clay, and soil sand are 3.68 ohm.m; 102.32 ohm.m; and lower the resistivity. Potential and protection currents in pipes in each soil are vary, in humus type soil, the potential and the pipe protection current is -1011.29 mV and 1.3 mA; on clay is -1007.13 and 1.29 mA; on sand soils of -1002 mV and 1.26 mA, the higher the volume of backfill, the lower the need for protection current in the pipeline and based on existing data, all pipes are protected because they correspond to the standard potential protection potential of NACE which is -1100 mV. -850mmV and zinc are the right anodes for the SACP circuit on three soils.
