Abstract

The research entitled “Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Carbon Compounds from Heating Palm Sugar” was conducted to analyze the structure, morphology, phase formation, molecular bonding, and particle size distribution of carbon compounds produced by heating palm sugar. The raw material used was palm sugar obtained from Lamongan District. The samples were initially heated at 250°C and subsequently reheated at 400°C, 500°C, 600°C, 700°C, and 1000°C. The resulting products were characterized using DSC-TGA, XRD, FTIR, PSA, and SEM-EDX. The XRD diffraction patterns of samples heated at 250°C, 400°C, and 500°C exhibited a broad peak at 2θ = 10°–30°, indicating the presence of amorphous carbon, while samples heated at 600°C, 700°C, and 1000°C showed the formation of a reduced graphene oxide phase, characterized by two broad peaks at approximately 2θ = 23° and 43°. FTIR analysis revealed that the dominant molecular bond was C=C, along with the presence of C–H, C=O, C–O, and O–H functional groups. SEM-EDX observations showed slab-like morphologies composed primarily of carbon and oxygen. Increasing the heating temperature resulted in a smaller particle size distribution in water as the dispersing medium, whereas a more irregular particle size distribution was observed when dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was used as the dispersing medium.
