Abstract
Kebutuhan dimethyl ether (DME) di Indonesia cukuplah tinggi, berrdasarkan Badan Pusat Statistik (2016), impor dimethyl ether pada tahun 2016 mencapai 65,814 ton/tahun. DME merupakan senyawa ether sederhana yang dapat diproduksi dan mempunyai angka cetan yang tinggi, dan sifat yang mendekati LPG seperti viskositas, titik didik dan tekanan, sehingga DME digunakan untuk menggantikan atau mengurangi penggunaan LPG di Indonesia. Proses produksi menggunakan proses sintesa langsung dengan kemurnian DME >99%. Proses produksi dibagi dalam tigas tahap. Tahap persiapan bahan baku, methanol cair dengan kemurnian 99,85% berat, methanol diubah dalam fase gas di vaporizer. Selanjutnya, tahap pembentukan DME dengan medehidrasi methanol menjadi dimethyl ether dan air dalam multitube fixed bed reactor dengan katalis alumina, kemudian tahap pemisahan produk dari komponen lainnya di kolom absorber dan kolom distilasi sebagai produk DME. Pabrik ini direncanakan berkapasitas 88.000 ton/tahun, beroperasi secara kontinyu selama 330 hari/tahun dengan basis 24 jam/hari. Methanol yang dibutuhkan sebesar 578,83 ton/hari. Kebutuhan air pada pabrik ini meliputi air sanitasi sebanyak 32,5 m3/hari; air pendingin sebanyak 2682,6 m3/hari; dan air umpan boiler sebanyak 1252,1 m3/jam.

The need for dimethyl ether (DME) in Indonesia is quite high, based on the Central Statistics Agency (2016), imports of dimethyl ether in 2016 reached 65,814 tons per year. DME is a simple ether compound that can be produced and has a high cetan number, and properties that are close to LPG such as viscosity, boiling point and pressure, so DME is used to replace or reduce the use of LPG in Indonesia. The production process uses a direct synthesis process with DME purity more than 99%. The production process is divided into three stages. The preparation phase for raw materials, liquid methanol with a purity 99.85% of weight, methanol is converted to the gas phase in the vaporizer. Furthermore, the stage of DME formation by hydrolyzing methanol to dimethyl ether and water in a multitubular fixed bed reactor with alumina catalyst, then the stage of product separation from other components in the absorber column and distillation column as DME products. The plant is planned to have a capacity of 88,000 tons per year, operating continuously for 330 days per year on a 24-hour per day basis. Methanol needed is 578,83 tons per day. Water requirements for this plant include sanitary water as much as 32,5 m³ per day; cooling water as much as 2682.6 m³ per day; and boiler feed water as much as 1252,1 m³ per hour.
