Abstract

Ship maneuverability is important because it can lead to ship accidents. Moreover if the ship operates in a narrow shipping lane, as experienced by SPUB Pusri Indonesia I. This research focuses on the experimental process of SPUB maneuvers in open waters, especially for the turning circles movement. The experiment was conducted using a model, SPB-XXOO, which was equipped with instrumentation system components; data logger and propulsion. Both are integrated with remote control and computers to perform control functions, calculations, data logging and data transfer through wireless communication system. The main controller of the propulsion system is implanted a program to deflect the rudder automatically. Three rudder models with variations in aspect ratios of 1.10, 1.65 and 2.20, and 3 variations of the rudder angle; 20o, 30o, 35o are used to test the ship. Data acquisition is done by GPS (receiver) and drone that work simultaneously for each experimental process. The results are analyzed using GPS and image processing methods, then verified by empirical methods. Verification shows that the image processing method provides more accurate results with an error value of 10.48%, while GPS provides an error of 11.08% against the results of empirical calculations. Based on the analysis of the effect of the rudder model, it was found that rudder with a large aspect ratio provides better performance than a lower aspect ratio.
