Abstract

Heavy pollution phenomenon which contaminate Brantas River downstream, comes from domestic waste and toxic waste from industry. This study identified river pollution levels by observing magnetic properties, which is correlating the intensity of heavy metal content with the magnetic values in sediment samples. Environmental magnetism is widely applied in the field of identifying the influence of heavy metals on sediments. The data used in this study are sediment samples along the Brantas River. Samples were taken at 20 location points, start from the downstream of DAM Mlirip Mojokerto until the upstream in Batu city, which the distance used between points was 11-13 km, with a total length of 250 km. The method used in this study is the measurement of magnetic susceptibility, AAS analysis (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy), and X-Ray Diffraction analysis. The results of the study obtained XLF 844 ( x 10-8 m3kg-1) - 7231.4 (x 10-8 m3kg-1) values, metal content of Cu 49.4 ppm, Co 22.4 ppm, 49.9 ppm, Fe 102,430.0 ppm, and Mn 1891.5 ppm, with the results of the correlation between XLF with Cu heavy metal content of -0.45, Co 0.65, Cr 0.36, Fe 0.7, and Mn 0.07. Based on geological conditions and location of sample collection, point BK to BT (rock region Qvlh, Qpkb, and Qva) shows a greater value (2058.23 x 10-8 m3kg-1) than the sample of point BA to BJ (Qa rock formation) with susceptibility value of 4079,089 x 10-8 m3kg-1. Small correlation values and large differences in susceptibility values indicate the effects of volcanic rocks, so that in geological conditions with heterogeneous magnetic properties of rocks the intensity of heavy metals cannot be correlated with magnetic properties.
