Abstract

Artificial reefs are artificial structures laid on seabeds by mimicking some of the characteristics of natural reefs, as well as to provide substrate for coral recruitment. One of the form in the construction of artificial reefs is a dome-shaped concrete, with the seashell waste and stone ash could be added as an alternative material to the concrete for artificial reefs. The purpose of the study is to know the composition density and level of coral recruitment on dome-shaped concrete artificial reefs made of different materials; C1), concrete without modification, composed by a mixture of Portland cement, sand and gravel, composition was 1:3:2; C2), concrete with modification by a mixture of Portland cement, sand and crushed bivalve’s shells, composition was 1:3:2; and C3), concrete with modification by a mixture of Portland cement, stone ash, sand and crushed bivalve’s shells, composition was 1:3:3:2. The result of environmental parameters include temperature, pH, salinity, brightness, and Dissolved Oxygen (DO) indicate that the range of values are still within tolerance limit of the coral capable of living, current velocity including in the slow category, and sedimentation rate including in mild to moderate category. The high level of recruitments (range 7,6-10 colonies/m2) occurred in C1 and C2 concretes, by 9.5 colonies/m2 and 8.7 colonies/m2, while the moderate level (range 5,1-7,5 colonies/m2) occurred in C3 concrete by 6.5 colonies/m2. Twelve genera of coral recruits were found, with dominated by Acropora (101 colonies), Porites (68 colonies) and Seriatopora (43 colonies)
