Abstract

The use of trim-tabs on high speed craft such as speed boats are often found. But not for warships like corvette ships. So an analysis of the ship motion by comparing three variations of the trim-tab angle (0 degrees, 3 degrees, 5 degrees) with three variations of the trim-tab plane area (AR1.5, AR1.75, AR2) at two velocity vessels which are 15 and 30 knots is needed. The application of panel-based numerical methods 3D-Diffraction method which is assisted by ANSYS AQWA software and 3D-Modeling programs such as Maxsurf and Rhinoceros can facilitate the process of running data.Trim-tab modeling in this study is modeled the same as the NASA SC (2) -0402 type airfoil. This analysis is used to find the RAO (Response Amplitude Operator) value, the response value of movements in irregular waves and some other coefficients that can affect the pitching and heaving values when the ship is moving with additional trim-tabs on the transom of the ship. The analysis results obtained are velocity condition, field ratio and the most optimal trim-tab angle in reducing RAO pitching and heaving values. The percentages in RAO pitching and heaving values reduction are 15knot (AR2-3 = 17,032% and AR2-3 = 7,480%) and 30knot (AR2-3 = 22,403% and AR2-5 = 6,442%). Furthermore, for the motion response value on irregular waves, the reductions of pitching and heaving spectrum response are respectively 15knot (AR2-3 = 41,983% and AR2-3 = 32,529%) and 30knot (AR2-3 = 49,602% and AR2-3 = 34,295%). Then, the added value of damping caused by the addition of the trim-tab as a whole can be concluded that the greatest addition occurs in AR2-3, the greater addition will impact the magnitude of the value decrement of RAO. The analysis process of this problem is expected to encourage a further research to correct high bow conditions in high speed craft due to the use of trim-tabs, both in terms of economic, safety and etc.
