Abstract

Refrigeration is a thermodynamic system involving heat transfer across the interface between system and environment. The heat transfer process is the main source of irreversibility in the cycle, which results in a decrease in the system performance. Therefore, in this study an analysis and optimization of the refrigeration system will be carried out in terms of energy and economy. The results indicate that the condenser and evaporator temperatures significantlyly affect system performance. Increasing condenser temperature yields a higher temperature difference relative to the environment which decreases COP, exergy efficiency, and total cost rate. Meanwhile, higher evaporator temperature decreases the compressor pressure ratio leading to an increase in COP and exergy efficiency and a decrease in the total cost rate. The multiobjective optimization process with genetic algorithm methods was used to determine the optimum operating parameters from the energy and economic aspects of the refrigeration system and TOPSIS decision making to determine the best solution. Based on this optimization, the optimum operating parameters were found at the condenser temperature of 53,65oC and the evaporator temperature of -3,92oC with the results of an exergy efficiency value of 69,1% and a total cost rate of 108.832 USD/year.
