Abstract

Discectomy or bone fusion procedure that are used to cure the lower back pain due to intervertebral disc degeneration potentially worsening the condition of the disc. Thus, an alternative solution was developed to overcome this problem by replacing the nucleus pulposus, the simplest part of intervertebral disc. One of the criteria that must be possessed by the nucleus pulposus replacement material is the radiopaque, so that the material can be seen on radiograph and simplifies the implantation process. Some of the most commonly used radiopacifiers are zirconium oxide, barium sulphate, iodine, and bismuth oxide. This paper review analyzes the effect of adding radiopacifiers to nucleus pulposus replacement material by considering the results of x-ray scanning, mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. These radiopacifiers can provide adequate radiopacity, increase tensile strength and Young modulus, but decrease compressive strength. Only iodine that increase the compressive strength. According to biocompatibility test, these radiopacifiers exhibit good biocompatibility in vivo and in vitro.
