Abstract

========================
Punjulharjo Boat is one of the boats that soared within Insular Southeast Asia that used lashed-lug technology. Dated around 7th to 8th CE, Punjulharjo Boat is predicted to had used Austronesian sail technology. There are two known types of Austronesian sails: madurese rig and tanja sail. But, there was no remains of its sail on the site where Punjulharjo Boat was found. Therefore, the reconstuction of its sail design is necessary to know the shape and its sailing performacne. Sail type is determined by examining of various historical records and iconography method. The dimension of the sail is obtained by comparing sails that have similar form from other ship. Then, the reconstructed sail is analysed to calculate its force, which will be used to propel the boat. Based on the reconstruction result, the sail type is tanja sail. The most suitable reconstructed sail plan for Punjulharjo Boat is two-masted Peledang, with the dimension of 8 × 4 m for its main sail and 5,016 × 2,508 m for its mizzen sail. With an average true wind speed of 16 knots, the sail plan gives Punjulharjo Boat a service speed that ranges between 2,5 knots and 6,5 knots, depending on its point of sail.
