Abstract

The purity of methanol is obtained by separating the composition of the methanol mixture from water in the distillation column. Composition control is very important, the composition of the top product (distillate) and the bottom product (bottom product) is maintained stability to match the set point by manipulating the reflux flow rate (L) and the reboiler steam flow rate (Qr). The composition control system in the distillation column is said to be a complex MIMO system because of the interaction of the process between the variable being manipulated and the variable being controlled. In this study, the decentralized MIMO system was used to minimize the influence of changes in manipulated variables that change the stability of the process. The proposed control model is fuzzy logic control which is suitable for nonlinear systems. Fuzzy will be used as a gain schedule for the values of control parameters on the PID controller. The controller designed will compare the response characteristics between conventional PID controllers with fuzzy type-1 gain schedule and fuzzy type-2 gain schedule controllers. The results show that fuzzy type-1 gain schedule has the best system stability compared to PID and fuzzy type-2 gain schedule with an overshoot value of 24.31% in the distillate composition and 13765% in the bottom product composition with a rise time of 3.19 seconds and 3.17 seconds and the settling time of 52.32 seconds and 67.06 seconds respectively. In addition, the fuzzy type-1 gain schedule controller is also resistant to interference and adaptive to changes in a given set point.
