Abstract

Indonesia is an archipelago with a long coastline. This is a challenge in the economic equality of each region. Moreover, the urbanization system implemented by the government to reduce the population density of each region. Because Indonesia is an archipelago, sea transportation is used to cross the island, both short and long distances. One of the ships that is often used to cross is the ferry. This type of ship is usually used to carry passengers and their vehicles.
KM Dharma Ferry VII is a ship used to transport passengers and vehicles such as trucks. The route is also long, namely Surabaya-Balikpapan and vice versa. KM Dharma Ferry VII is a ship owned by PT. Dharma Lautan Utama, which has been in operation since 2018. There are 33 crew members and 62 crew members with overall characteristics of adult males with an average working period of 3-10 years with hard characteristics, work discipline, lack of attention to surroundings and personal needs, and are required to work quickly and precisely.
Based on survey results and direct interviews with the crew, there are some shortcomings that exist on the ship, namely the need for facilities in the economic space, the unity of the interior of the ship, and saturation in the crew. The saturation on the ship is caused because for three weeks all crew members must remain on the ship. The interior re-design of KM Dharma Ferry applies a modern ethnic concept. This is in line with the rules on the ship and as a characteristic of the interior of the ship to enhance the impression on passengers. Modern is applied to the colors and formations of multifunctional furniture, while ethnicity is an interior characteristic that displays the ship's route.
Based on the explanation that has been described, the authors see the large role of interior redesign in participating in helping the development of sea transportation in Indonesia. In addition, with this report the author hopes to inspire the development of ship interior design, especially passenger ships in Indonesia.
