Abstract

The arm is the excavator part that functions as a link between bucket and boom. One part of the arm that is often damaged is the connection between the arm and the boom due to compressive and bending stresses during lifting and digging operations. In that section has a small cross-sectional area compared to the body of the arm, so that it experiences the greatest stress.
In this research, a kinematic and dynamic analysis is performed on the excavator’s arm so that the simulation results approach the operating conditions. This operating condition is reviewed from the boom, arm, and ends in the bucket of the excavator which modeled using 3D Modeling Software, and then assembly with 3D Model Excavator. Then, the calculation result of loading will be simulated with the finite element method to determine the equivalent stress and the safety factor. In this research, the condition of the excavator boom, arm, and bucket will be conditioned in two conditions (maximum condition of the excavator working) are the first condition and the second condition with the variation of angle θ3 are 293,09o; 279,7o; 266,32o; and 252,93o.
The result shows that the equivalent stress value that occurs in condition two is greater than the equivalent stress value that occurs in condition one. Where is the maximum equivalent stress lies in the connection between the arm and the boom. For each condition tested, there are two positions which are declared safe for excavator operation on hard clay soil, that are at an angle θ3 is 293,09o when the condition one angle θ2 is 61,64o and the angle θ4 is 253,58o and at condition two where the angle θ2 is 356,28o and the angle θ4 is 10o.
