Abstract

========================================================================================================================Conflicts in the world may become armed aggression which can end in injuries and deaths. Currently, the most common type of arms that is being used are firearms. Therefore, in an effort to prevent the emergence of too many casualties because of firearms, an appropriate protective equipment is needed. NIJ 0101.06 type IV is the highest standard that can be used as a reference to develop protective equipment against firearms projectile.
Composite is a material that is commonly used as a base for making ballistic resistant material. Its nearly limitless choice of configurable settings has made composite a key material to develop modern ballistic resistant protective equipment. Various variations of aramid fibers bonded together by certain polymers have proven to be effective on stopping firearms projectiles and absorbing its kinetic energy. Unfortunately, apart from the relatively high production costs, aramid fibers which are classified as synthetic fibers are also a source of environmental pollution.
Ramie fibers are known as natural fibers that have the potential to compete with aramid fiber as a reinforcement for composite material. This study aims to utilize numerical modeling using finite element software, to simulate the application of laminated composite structure from a number of epoxy-woven ramie fibers layer with a certain thickness as a type IV ballistic resistant material, according to NIJ 0101.06 standards, in an effort to find the optimal amount of layers of the intended composite configuration.
The results obtained from this study is plate variations with 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20 number of layers have succeeded to meet the penetration and backface signature standard of NIJ 0101.06 type IV. It is also known that increasing the number of layers makes the plate require more energy to be deformed. However this does not provide sufficient justification of continuing to increase the number of layers. Because each plate’s variation performance, which is measured by calculating the plate’s specific work, is also known to decreases along with the increase of number of layers. The specific work for each plate variation is 438,011 Joules/kg for 12 layers, 389,069 Joules/kg for 13 layers, 359,558 Joules/kg for 14 layers, 335.04 Joules/kg for 15 layers, 311,565 Joule/kg for 16 layers, 315,851 Joules/kg for 17 layers, 290,499 Joules/kg for 18 layers, 279,804 Joules/kg for 19 layers, and 266,512 Joules/kg for 20 layers. The plate with the most optimal configuration is the 13-layer plate, because all layers on the plate are properly utilized to absorb or dissipate energy, the plate is not in imminent danger of failure, and the plate’s specific work has a relatively high value compared to other plate variations.
