Abstract

Magnesium alloy is one of the materials that can be applied to implant biomaterials, but it has a disadvantage, namely the value of the degradation rate, which is high enough so, metal coating is needed with the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) method. In this study, tricalcium phosphate (TCP) was used with alginate as post-treatment. In this study, the variations in the mass addition of TCP used to be 5 g/l, 7.5 g/l, and 10 g/l. Variations in the addition of alginate mass used were 5 g/l, 10 g/l, and 15 g/l dissolved in aquadest for the dip coating process. From the results of the morphological data obtained, the variation that produced the smallest pore was the TCP 10 g/l at 0.348 µm. Then the alginate mass variation of 15 g/l resulted in a small pore of 0.073 µm and the smallest thickness was obtained in the alginate mass variation of 15 g/l of 28.013 µm. Then, the rate of degradation was measured using the weight loss and polarization methods. The results of the weight loss test of 15 g/l alginate mass variation had the slowest degradation rate of 0.31 mpy, this degradation rate decreased significantly compared to AZ31B without treatment at 14.87 mpy and AZ31B with PEO tricalcium phosphate 10 g/l by 13.09 mpy. Then the results of the mass variation polarization test of alginate 15 g/l had the slowest degradation rate of 0.60 mpy, this degradation rate decreased significantly compared to AZ31B without treatment which had a degradation rate of 27.52 mpy and AZ31B with PEO tricalcium phosphate 10 g/l is 15.92 mpy.
