Abstract

Along with the increasing need for energy, it must also be balanced with the provision of sufficient energy sources to support the growth of Indonesia's electrification ratio. This is no exception to the development of energy demand and supply on Ambon Island, Maluku Islands. In this study, the use of Renewable Energy (RE) power plants, namely the use of water turbines using ocean currents from the flow path of the regional canal creation plan in Ambon, Maluku Islands. The shape of the area is one of the interesting things to make a canal as a flow path for ocean currents from the difference in height at that location. Due to the difference in height cannot be determined with certainty, in this study the authors vary the difference in height between the sea in the east and the sea on the left, namely 1 m, 2 m, 3 m, 4 m, and 5 m. Current modeling uses a numerical approach with a simulation using the Surface-Water Modeling System (SMS) 8.1 software. Then the average current velocity in the canal in each variation is obtained sequentially, namely 1.17 m/s, 1.42 m/s, 1.51 m/s, 1.65 m/s, 1.86 m/s. The selection of the Gorlov turbine type uses experimental turbine data from existing journal references to be used in calculating the turbine torque for a full-scale turbine in this study. The turbine selection is adjusted to the current speed generated in each variation. The turbine with the greatest torque is owned by a turbine with 25% efficiency, namely the 4-blade Gorlov NACA0012 turbine with a turbine diameter of 9.5 m, totaling 1 unit.
