Abstract

Plants respond to herbivory activity by releasing secondary metabolites, deterrents, and leaf nutrients. This study aims to determine differences in herbivory levels, nutrient content, secondary metabolites, and deterrents; as well as the effect of nutrient content, secondary metabolites, and repellent compounds (deterrent) on herbivory levels in mangroves Rhizophora mucronata and Rhizophora apiculata. in mangroves Wonorejo, Surabaya. The results showed that the herbivory level in the form of damaged leaf area on R. apiculata was higher than R. mucronata although not significant (p = 0.079), as well as the herbivory percentage although not significant (p = 0.066). The nutrient content in the form of phosphorus in R. mucronata tended to be insignificantly higher than R. apiculata (p = 0.735), on the other hand, the water content was higher in R. apiculata than R. mucronata, although not significant (p = 0.848). Secondary metabolites in the form of polyphenols showed a higher content in R. mucronata, compared to R. apiculata, although this difference was not significant (p = 0.714) and lignin showed a higher content in R. mucronata, compared to R. apiculata, although this difference was not significant (p = 0.829). The content of repellent / deterrent in the form of crude fiber showed the same tendency as secondary metabolites, where R. mucronata contained significantly more crude fiber than R. apiculata (p = 0.003). Herbivory levels were significantly positively correlated with the area of leaf damage in R apiculata and R. mucronata species but insignificantly correlated with all nutrients in leaves (phosphorus and water), secondary metabolites in leaves (polyphenols and lignin) and repellents / deterrents in the form of fiber.
