Abstract

==========================================================
The use of steam power plants still dominates Indonesia’s source of electricity until today. In its operational state, steam power plants use seawater to condense steam and reject heat from the cycle. This causes seawater with temperature higher than average at the cooling water outlet discharge to the sea. This temperature rise will affect the surrounding aquatic ecosystem until a certain range from the discharge. From this problem statement, the writer does a study to treat and to utilize steam condenser wastewater by implementing OTEC system. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) is a system that converts thermal energy contained on the upper layer of the sea into electricity. In its operation, OTEC system uses the cold deep seawater as its heat sink. By this implementation, it is hoped to reduce the condenser wastewater temperature and to generate renewable electricity. And so, in this study thermodynamics parameters will be analysed to generate the highest nett power and its effect to the temperature of the OTEC system outlet water.
This study begins by defining the study case location by the potential of the steam plant surrounding waters. In this study, Jeranjang steam power plant (3×25MW) is chosen as the studied case. For the thermodynamics analysis, total seawater mass flowrate and heat exchanger pinch point temperature is set to 300 kg/s and 1oC. The analysis method varies the warm and cold seawater mass flowrate ratio of ½, 1, 2, and the cold temperature change in the condenser of 1-12oC to get the highest nett power. The performance of three working fluids, ammonia, propane, and isobutane also compared based on the best variation. Then, the temperature of the OTEC system outlet water will also be obtained.
The result of this study shows that warm and cold seawater mass flowrate ratio of 1, the cold temperature change in the condenser of 7,5oC on an ammonia-based cycle gives the highest nett power. The temperature of the OTEC system outlet water of 21,5oC is hoped to be able to minimize the environmental impact of steam condenser wastewater. Finally, plate heat exchangers have been designed as evaporator with heat transfer area of 543,4 m2 and condenser with heat transfer area of 480,3 m2.
