Abstract

Direct reduction is one of the methods used in nickel extraction from limonitic nickel laterite. Briquettes become an important part of direct reduction. This research examines the appropriate compaction pressure of briquettes to achieve the optimum concentration, Recovery of Ni and Fe and selectivity factors, also analyze the compounds formed. The briquettes in this study were made at a pressure of 20 kgf/cm2, 30kgf/cm2, 40kgf/cm2 and 50kgf/cm2. This research was carried out by mixing the prepared materials and then compacting them to form briquettes. After that, it is put into a crucible and the coal-limestone bed mixture is added and put into the muffle furnace. Then the direct reduction was started by heating at 700oC for 2 hours and continued at 1400oC for 6 hours and continued with magnetic separation, then weighing the reduction products. The product results were tested with SEM-EDX to determine the content and XRD to determine the compounds formed where optimal results were obtained at variations of 30Kgf/cm2 with a Ni content of 5,00%, Ni Recovery of 86,76% with a selectivity factor of 4,72. The compounds found in the reduction products include FeNi, Fe3Si, SiO2 and FeO and MgSiO4 which indicate an incomplete reduction process.
