Abstract

Pistons is a components with a crucial role in internal combustion engines which has to withstand extreme working conditions. Improving the mechanical properties by T6 heat treatment process according to ASM Vol 2 was carried out on casting aluminum alloys. The aluminum alloy in this study corresponds to the type of aluminum 336. This study aims to analyze the changes in hardness and microstucture after artificial aging heat treatment with variations in temperature and holding time. T6 heat treatmentis applied subsequent to aluminum casting, its begin by solution heat treatment and artificial aging. Solution heat treatment was carried out at a temperature of 520 οC for 8 hours, then quenched in warm water media. Artificial aging was carried out at various temperature including 130 οC, 170 οC, and 210 οC with holding time 15, 18, and 21hours each. Coherent β’’-Mg2Si precipitate with a crystal structure are connected to the aluminum matrix, and their transformation to semi-coherent β’- Mg2Si is formed during artificial aging affects the peak hardness condition according to the tests carried out. The transformation of β’’ to β’ decrease of hardness value. At aging temperature of 210 οC and each holding times fulfilled Mahle M124 piston standard with range 90-130 HB.
