Abstract

Diesel Engine Generators are widely used because of their ease to be designed and engineered. However, DEG is expensive because the fuel cost are quite large. The way to reduce DEG costs is to build hybrid system with Solar Photovoltaic. In General, DEG operates at constant speed for certain minimum load conditions, which are generally worth more than 50% of the power value despite low actual load demand. This affects on low fuel efficiency in low load power demand conditions. Operating the DEGs at variable speed can improve the DEG's fuel efficiency as the load power demand corresponds the power generated. In a hybrid system utilizing Photovoltaic to supply load power needs, DEG is in charge of supplying the shortfall of load power demands. This final project presents modeling and the optimal control simulation of DEG using Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) which operates with variable speed on hybrid solar photovoltaic and DEG system. All simulations were conducted using Matlab/Simulink. The results of the simulation will be used to consider the use of a variable speed diesel engine generator using a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator in a Solar Photovoltaic hybrid system and Diesel Engine Generator
