Abstract

In order to gain profits and minimizing carbon dioxide, many process industries maximize heat recovery through the Heat exchanger Network (HEN). The main problem experienced by HEN is the same as for heat exchangers in general, namely fouling. Mixing the wrong crude oil or improper mixing sequence can exacerbate fouling conditions. So in this final project, a research was conducted on the selection of the right blending crude oil to be applied to the HEN contained in the Petronas Refinery Unit with LSWR products, with numbers E-1104, E-1108, and E-1111 in order to minimize fouling. The crude oils used in this study include: Bintulu, Tapis, Miri, and Dulang. The optimization methods used are Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) and Genetic Algorithm (GA). Results of the calculation of fouling rate value with Polley equation shows the effect that the greater mass flow rate value, the greater velocity value which is then entered into the Reynolds equation. The greater Reynolds value, will causing the smaller the fouling rate value. The results showed that fouling resistance value on the tube side was successfully reduced from normal operating, the largest using the GA method with each value being 0.0691, 0.0478, and 0.0249 using 100% crude blending Bintulu oil.
