Abstract

Research on modification of fabric into antibacterial materials is of great significance due to the increasing need for masks. Cotton fabrics are widely choosen due to their flexibility and water absorptivity. On the other hand, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks type 8 (ZIF-8) shows good antibacterial properties. The synthesis of ZIF-8 and Chitosan/ZIF-8 (CS/ZIF-8) had been successfully carried out at room temperature in 2% acetic acid solvent, with the addition of 30%, 60% and 120% chitosans by weight of ZIF-8. The XRD diffractogram patterns as well as the ZIF-8 and CS/ZIF-8 FTIR spectra were in accordance with the diffractograms and spectra that had been reported for the ZIF-8 material. In addition, ZIF-8 and Chitosan/ZIF-8 had been successfully coated on cotton fabrics directly during the synthesis process and were denoted as ZIF-8@CF and CS/ZIF-8@CF, respectively. The surface morphology of ZIF-8, CS/ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@CF equipped with SEM-EDX showed that ZIF-8 had a dodecahedron shape that was still visible in CS/ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@CF. The antibacterial test results showed that ZIF-8, CS/ZIF-8 and ZIF-8@CF had good antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
