Abstract

In this study, PSf/ZnO Mixed Matrix Membrane (MMM) has been prepared with a flat sheet module. ZnO was synthesized from zinc acetate and oxalic acid precursors by hydrothermal method and then used as filler material in polysulfone matrix. MMM PSf/ZnO was prepared by phase inversion technique to form an asymmetric membrane. Variations of ZnO loading were 0,1%, 0,3% and 0,5% w/w, weight relative to the weight of the polymer. The results of X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) show that the interaction between PSf and ZnO is a physical interaction. Meanwhile, the results of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDXA) showed a uniform distribution of Zn elements on the surface and cross section of the membrane. In general, the order of gas permeability in PSf/ZnO membranes is H2 > N2 > CO2 > O2 > CH4. The optimum selectivity of H2/CO2, H2/CH4, CO2/CH4, and N2/CH4 gases was observed in the addition of 0,3% w/w ZnO with an increase of 82%, 224%, 78% and 151% respectively compared to the neat polysulfone membrane. For H2/N2 gas pair, the highest increasement of selectivity 36% was obtained at the addition of 0,5% w/w ZnO. Beside that, for the CO2/N2 and O2/N2 gas pairs the trend has not been clearly observed. MMM PSf/ZnO is very potential for gas separation of N2/CH4 and H2/CO2 because the separation performance of N2/CH4 is above the Robeson line and H2/CO2 is around the Robeson line.
