Abstract

Filter Bank Multicarrier (FBMC) is one of the most studied multicarrier techniques because it has the advantage of a Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) which is lower than Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). However, the use of M-ary Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OQAM) which has different amplitude variations from one QAM symbol to another, causes PAPR in FBMC to increase. In addition, FBMC/OQAM has intrinsic interference, so it is interesting to analyze the effect of nonlinear distortion on the FBMC/OQAM system with M-ary variations and also observe the intrinsic interference factor on system performance.
This study analyzes the effect of the nonlinearity of the FBMC/OQAM system compared to OFDM/QAM . From the scatterplot analysis after passing through the HPA, it was found that the FBMC/OQAM system has a more diffuse amplitude distortion characteristic, while the OFDM/QAM system has a larger phase distortion characteristic of 8.23◦. Furthermore, in the analysis of the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance, the HPA OFDM-4QAM nonlinear system has 6dB better performance than the nonlinear HPA FBMC-4OQAM system. On the 16-ary each system has the same bad performance and there is an error floor at Eb/No=20dB. By doing a simple repair using a predistorter, we get a costal improvement on the FBMC/OQAM and OFDM/QAM systems. Then, the BER performance improvement was 18dB for the FBMC-4OQAM system and 12dB for the OFDM-4QAM system. This indicates that the repair with the predistorter is more suitable for the FBMC/OQAM system than the OFDM/QAM.
