Abstract

The availability of energy sources is one aspect that determines the movement of human activities in the current era. Until now, mankind still relies on energy sources that come from fossils, one example of fossil energy sources is petroleum. Lately, experts are competing to create and develop various types of renewable energy sources that can be utilized. One of the great energy potentials that can be developed in Indonesia is ocean current energy. One system that uses ocean current energy is a water turbine. Until now, many have developed the vertical type Savonius turbine because it has the advantage that it can operate in low-speed currents. However, the cross-flow type Savonius turbine has not yet been developed. The addition of a flow deflector affects the performance of the turbine because the flow of water that leads to the returning blade is deflected and strengthens the flow of the advancing blade. The analysis was carried out using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach using Ansys Fluent software. The results showed that the highest performance increase was 47%, with the best configuration being on the deflector with a distance of 0.22 m at TSR 0.6957, which was 0.41.
